Care and Maintenance

For maximum accuracy and best results, your LeCOUNT™ Expanding Mandrels should be meticulously clean and free of grease or oil during use. Remember, it does not take much debris between a slot and a jaw to cause the T.I.R. to become greater than 0.0001. We recommend periodic disassembly and cleaning. The process only takes about five minutes when the steps outlined below are followed. Additionally, cleaning is advised if the mandrel appears dirty, if there are streaks in the slot, or if your parts are not meeting your specification tolerances. An allen wrench, small metal dowel, paper towels and alcohol are required.

Disassemble

.

  1. Loosen the LIMIT SCREW in the SLEEVE.
  2. Determine which type of SPRING CLIP(s) your mandrel has. Note the orientation of the SPRING CLIP(s) between the SLEEVE and the JAWS. They must be reassembled in the same orientation. You may wish to refer to our "Spring Identification chart" below to identify the type of spring you have.
  3. While holding the JAWS firmly, slide the SLEEVE and the JAWS off the end of the ARBOR.  The SPRINGS will fall out and the mandrel will then be completely disassembled.

Clean

  1. Using denatured alcohol, clean all the mandrel components.
  2. Pay special attention to the SLOTS in the ARBOR. We fold a paper towel to form an edge that fits snugly in the SLOT. After wetting the folded edge with alcohol, move in one direction along the SLOT from the LOADING END to the DRIVING END of the ARBOR. The SLOT must be spotless and free of debris. Be very thorough.
  3. Visually inspect the SLOTS. Set the ARBOR on the DRIVING END; look down the SLOTS.
  4. Carefully wipe the JAWS also. They too must be perfectly free of debris. The bottom of the JAWS can be polished on a 15 micron polishing paper if you wish.

Reassemble

  1. Set the SLEEVE down so that the large bore diameter is facing up and the LIMIT SCREW
    hole is facing you.
  2. Note the etched numbers on the inside of the SLEEVE and on the TRUNNION of the JAWS.
It is critical that the jaws are returned to their proper slots: (jaw #1 goes in hole #1; jaw #2
in hole #2; jaw #3 in hole #3).
  3. Give the bottom of the JAWS one last wipe and inspect for debris. Be sure not to touch the
bottom of the JAWS for the rest of the procedure.
  4. Set the TRUNNION of each JAW in its matching hole in the sleeve.
  5. Orient the ARBOR so that it is standing up on the DRIVING END with the LIMIT SLOT facing you.
  6. Pick up the SLEEVE and JAW assembly and slide it onto the end of the ARBOR. Care must be
taken to ensure that the SLEEVE and JAWS line up with the SLOTS and that the JAWS are lined up with the TRUNNION HOLES in the SLEEVE.
  7. Slide the SLEEVE half way down the ARBOR. Visually check one more time to see that no
debris lies between each JAW and its SLOT.
  8. Pinch JAWS together so that they are riding flat in the SLOTs and TRUNNIONs stay put in the TRUNNION holes. Then install the SPRING CLIP(s). Note: for 3G, 4G or 7G springs, we use a
small metal dowel to nudge the spring into place. You should hear a snap when this is accomplished. For 1 & 2G circular coil springs, slide down over the small lip which then holds
spring in place. Spring joint should be clearly visible between any 2 jaws.
  9. Slide the SLEEVE further down until the LIMIT SCREW hole is within the LIMIT SLOT on the ARBOR.
  10. Tighten the LIMIT SCREW until snug in the LIMIT SLOT and then back it off 1/4 turn.
  11. Now slide the SLEEVE back and forth to ensure that it is working properly. The JAWS should
stay in contact with the SLOTS and the SLEEVE should move smoothly. If this is not the case,
check the SPRINGS and LIMIT SCREW to make sure that they were replaced correctly.

Loading

  1. Set MANDREL on its DRIVING END.
  2. Load PART on LOADING END. Center
PART axially along the appropriate step.
Note: Some MANDRELs have two different diameter STEPs. Position your PART in the center of the appropriate STEP. Do not rest the PART on the step shoulder.
  3. Draw SLEEVE back until the three JAWS contact the bore of your PART.
  4. Tap DRIVING END of MANDREL lightly
on an anvil while holding PART firmly
in place. PART is now ready for your inspection process.

Unloading                                                                                  Loading and Unloading

  1. While holding PART and MANDREL together,
tap LOADING END on anvil to release PART.
  2. Remove PART carefully.
